Tip Calculator

Calculate the tip and split the bill between any number of people.

Runs in your browser

Enter the bill amount, pick a tip percentage, and split between any number of people. Common US tip levels are pre-set; drag the slider for anything else.

Tip

$9.00

Total

$59.00

Per person

$59.00

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill

Drop the bill total into the input. Pre- or post-tax is up to you.

  2. Pick a tip rate

Use a preset (10–25%) or drag the slider for a custom rate.

  3. Split the total

Set the number of people. The per-person amount updates in real time.

What is it?

A tip calculator computes the gratuity to add to a bill at a chosen percentage and splits the total across a chosen number of people. It's the same arithmetic as percent + division, with the convenience of common tip presets (10/15/18/20/25) and a slider for in-between rates.

When to use it

After a restaurant meal, taxi/Uber ride, hairdresser visit or any service where tipping is customary. Also useful for splitting a group bill at a bar or for calculating how much each person owes after rounding the tip up to a whole-dollar amount.

Common mistakes

Tipping on the post-tax total when the restaurant is in a high-tax jurisdiction - that quietly adds ~2% on top of your intended tip. Forgetting that some restaurants auto-include gratuity for parties over 6 people. And the global one: assuming US tipping norms apply abroad - in Japan or much of Europe, an enthusiastic 20% tip can be received as awkward.

FAQ

What's a normal tip in the US?
15–20% for sit-down restaurants, 18% is a common middle. Tips above 25% are generous; below 10% signals poor service. Tipping norms vary widely by country - most of Europe and Asia tip far less, if at all.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Either is acceptable. Tipping on pre-tax saves a couple of percent on the same percentage tip; tipping on the post-tax total is simpler arithmetic.
